What Is Volumetric Weight? A Simple Guide for UK Parcel Delivery

If you’ve searched something like:

  • “Why is my parcel charged by size not weight?”

  • “What is volumetric weight in shipping?”

  • “How do couriers calculate parcel size pricing?”

Then this guide is for you!

Volumetric weight is one of the most misunderstood parts of courier pricing, but once you understand it, everything makes sense.

Here’s what you need to know…

What Does Volumetric Weight Mean?

Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight) measures how much space your parcel takes up.

Instead of just asking “How heavy is it?”, couriers also ask “How much room does this take in the network?”

The Simple Formula

At TaurFlex, volumetric weight is calculated as:

(Width × Depth × Height in cm) ÷ 4000

This converts your parcel’s size into a weight equivalent.

Real-World Example

Let’s compare two parcels:

Parcel A

  • 40 × 30 × 20 cm

  • 10kg actual weight

Volumetric weight:
40 × 30 × 20 = 24,000 ÷ 4000 = 6kg

= Charged as 10kg (because the actual weight is higher)

Parcel B

  • 80 × 50 × 40 cm

  • 10kg actual weight

Volumetric weight:
80 × 50 × 40 = 160,000 ÷ 4000 = 40kg

= Charged as 40kg (as size is the driver here)

Why This Matters

Two parcels can weigh the same, but cost completely different amounts to ship.

That’s because:

  • Vans fill up with space before weight

  • Large parcels reduce how many deliveries can be carried

  • Sorting systems are designed around size limits

Volumetric pricing ensures fair use of the network.

How It Affects Your TaurFlex Quote

Once volumetric weight is calculated, TaurFlex:

  1. Compares it with actual weight

  2. Uses the higher figure (chargeable weight)

  3. Places the parcel into a pricing band

TaurFlex Weight Bands

  • 0–5kg

  • 5–30kg

  • Over 30kg (with additional per kg pricing)

When Surcharges Apply

Volumetric weight isn’t the only factor.

Your parcel may also incur extra charges if it is:

  • Very Heavy: Over 30kg triggers additional pricing, and specific thresholds trigger heavyweight surcharges

  • Very Long: Items over 120cm in length incur increasing charges

  • Out of Gauge: If two sides exceed 80cm, a surcharge applies

These reflect the extra handling and transport challenges involved.

Zones: Another Key Factor

Your delivery postcode determines your pricing zone:

  • Zone A (default UK mainland)

  • Zone B, C, D (extended or remote areas)

  • Isle of Wight / Isles of Scilly (special handling)

Higher zones reflect higher delivery costs.

Common Questions Answered

“Why is my light parcel expensive?”

Because it’s large! Volumetric weight is higher than actual weight, as we need to make sure we fit as many parcels into our vans as possible to get your delivery there on time.

“Can I avoid volumetric charges?”

Only by reducing parcel size. Weight alone won’t change it, so think carefully about your packaging where possible.

“Do all couriers use this system?”

Yes! Volumetric pricing is standard across the logistics industry.

Practical Tips to Save Money

  • Use right-sized boxes

  • Avoid “just in case” oversized packaging

  • Compress items where safe to do so

  • Measure parcels accurately before booking

How Much Your Parcel will Cost to Ship

Volumetric weight isn’t a hidden fee. It’s a core part of how modern courier networks operate.

Understanding it helps you:

  • Predict costs more accurately

  • Package goods more efficiently

  • Avoid unexpected charges

At TaurFlex, our pricing calculator applies these rules clearly, so you can see exactly how your quote is built before you book. Talk to our team to find out more.
